Water-based and oil-based pomade compared

Water-based formulas usually rinse easier. Oil-based greases keep a never-dry feel and need a degreasing wash. Unorthodox water formulas try to sit between those poles.

Two bases, two wash days

Reuzel's 2026 weight-and-hold guide says water-based pomades tend to feel lighter and rinse out easily, while oil-based pomades feel heavier, keep a never-dry feel, and throw a deeper shine. Kent of Inglewood adds the social cost: greases leave marks on hats, pillows, and towels, and they need a special degreasing shampoo if you want to avoid buildup.

Water-based gelEasier daily wash. Reuzel says it prefers slightly damp hair. The live quiz does not ask climate and does not score humidity. If sweat ruins a set, that is your own check against the tin, not a ranked FindMyPomade field.
Oil-based greaseHarder wash. Better when you want restyle without water. Worse when an oily or reactive scalp is already a problem. Kent of Inglewood treats that wash cost as part of choosing grease, not as a surprise after the first pillow stain.
Unorthodox waterO'Douds describes its Multi Purpose Pomade as water-resistant, restylable, and meant for heat, humidity, or a workout. That is the manufacturer's own claim. The catalog encodes the row as water_unorthodox so the quiz can treat it differently from a firm water gel.

Inspect one of each before you buy a story

Compare the Reuzel Blue Pomade record with the Reuzel Green Grease record. Then open O'Douds Multi Purpose Pomade. The useful difference is washout and restyle, not the word pomade printed on three lids.
